Call to Action (CTA)
A call to action (CTA) is a phrase or button that prompts a user to take a specific action.
A call to action (CTA) is a phrase or button in an ad, post, or landing page that directs users toward a desired next step. It states the intended action with a clear verb, such as "Sign up now," "Learn more," or "Start for free."
CTAs matter in marketing because they bridge content and measurable outcomes like sign-ups, inquiries, purchases, or downloads. A CTA tends to perform better when a single piece of content focuses on one goal and makes both the benefit and the next step clear.
In practice, teams A/B test the wording, color, placement, and number of CTAs, then gauge results through click-through rate (CTR) or conversion rate. The phrasing is usually adapted to the channel—social media, email, search ads—and to where the user is in their journey.
