Prompt

A prompt is the instruction, question, or contextual information you give a generative AI model, such as ChatGPT or an image generator, to obtain a desired output. Text is the most common form, but a prompt can also include images or example data. The AI interprets the prompt and produces a corresponding answer, piece of writing, or image.

Because output quality depends heavily on how specific and well-structured the prompt is, the practice of designing and refining prompts to get better results is called prompt engineering. Effective prompts usually spell out the goal, the audience, the desired format, any constraints, and reference examples.

In marketing work, prompts are the key input when generating ad copy, social posts, blog drafts, or product images. The more context a prompt carries about brand tone, target audience, and required phrasing, the closer the result tends to be to something usable.
